Bay windows are a beautiful feature in any home but they can be one of the trickiest to shade properly. At Ashley Blinds, we’ve been advising, designing and fitting made-to-measure bay window solutions across Dorset for over two decades.

Shutters for Bay Windows
For most bay windows, made-to-measure hardwood shutters are the gold standard. They’re stable, insulating, and made to last – unlike MDF or fabricated woods that can warp or swell. Our Paulownia hardwood shutters give you excellent light control, and in bedrooms they can be paired with integrated pleated blackout blinds for a near-perfect blackout.
Wood Venetian Blinds
If shutters aren’t the right fit for your budget just yet, wood venetians are a stylish and practical alternative. With 50mm slats, they insulate better than aluminium, offer great privacy and are lower maintenance. For a softer finish, we often layer them with bay window curtains ensuring the track is carefully shaped and fitted to carry the extra weight.
Roller & Roman Blinds
Roller and roman blinds can be fitted into bay windows, and they’re a great choice if you want fabric style and colour to be the star of the show. They’re particularly effective for shading while still allowing you to enjoy the view outside.
However, it’s important to understand their limitations:
- Gaps will appear between blinds to allow for the bay’s angles.
- Roman blinds in particular have waterfall folds, which can clash (“foul”) against one another if not carefully spaced.
- Both styles are either up or down — meaning privacy control is limited compared to shutters or venetians.
They remain a lovely option for a soft finish, especially when paired with curtains, but we’ll always talk you through how they’ll look and function in your specific bay.
Vertical Blinds
For a flexible and low-maintenance option, vertical blinds remain popular. They can be installed as multiple blinds in one bay or on a bespoke curved track for continuous louvres. With a wide choice of fabrics — plain, woven, blackout, or sun-reflective — they give you plenty of options to also complement curtains in the same bay.
Curtains for Bay Windows
Curtains are often the finishing touch to a bay window, but they come with unique challenges. Bay window curtains are usually heavy, so the track holding them must be strong and shaped precisely. That’s why we only install our own hand-bent tracks, designed to work with our made-to-measure UK-made curtains.
